This strain carries a recessive spontaneous mutant allele in which a single base (G) has been deleted in exon 4 of the Ugt1a1 gene. Microsatellite analysis of the background of this strain indicates that the Wistar stock background is now an inbred strain background which is designated as Gunn.
Homozygous females are sterile. Typical breeding scheme is homozygous or heterozygous male mated to heterozygous female. Higher pup numbers are seen with heterozygous x heterozygous breeding scheme.
