The amount of alpha-fetoprotein, a highly abundant plasma protein produced by the yolk sac, liver and gastrointestinal tract during fetal life and by certain neoplasms in the adult, in a specified volume of serum, the clear liquid that separates from blood after it has clotted completely, i.e. blood plasma from which fibrinogen has been removed.
