A condition in which the main influencing factor is any substance that is poisonous or destructive to nerve cells or tissue, or that can be metabolized into a substance that is destructive to nerve cells or tissue.

Note that, although commonly used to refer to any neurotoxic substance, the term "neurotoxin" is technically restricted to naturally occurring proteins or peptides which are neurotoxic.
