A compound containing a sulfonamide functional group. A sulfonamide functional group contains sulfonyl connected to an amine group and has the general structure R-S(=O)2-NH2. Sulfonamide also refers to several classes of drugs which include antimicrobial 'sulfa drugs', anticonvulsants and the sulfonylureas and thiazide diuretics.
