Definition: Those metabolic reactions involved in the synthesis of terpenoids. The terpenoids, sometimes referred to as isoprenoids, are a class of naturally-occurring chemicals. Terpenoids are derived from five-carbon isoprene units and are assembled and modified in manifold ways. They are classified according to the number of isoprene units. The mevalonate pathway and the non-mevalonate MEP/DOXP pathway are the two biosynthetic routes. The first can branch into non-sterol and sterol-producing compounds. The second is only found in plants.
