Definition:aberrant concentration in the blood of lysine (2,6-diaminohexanoic acid), an essential alpha-amino acid used in protein biosynthesis; in humans, lysine plays additional roles in the crosslinking of collagen polypeptides, uptake of essential mineral nutrients, and in the production of carnitine, which is key in fatty acid metabolism; it is also involved in epigenetic regulation by means of histone modification
