MAMMALIAN PHENOTYPE - ANNOTATIONS

The Mouse Adult Gross Anatomy Ontology and Mammalian Phenotype Ontology are downloaded weekly from the Mouse Genome Informatics databases at Jackson Laboratories (ftp://ftp.informatics.jax.org/pub/reports/index.html). For more information about these ontologies, see the MGI Publications Page at http://www.informatics.jax.org/mgihome/other/publications.shtml.

Definition:any structural anomaly of the modified smooth muscle cells that are interposed between endothelial cells and the basement membrane in the central or stalk region of the capillary tuft of the renal glomerulus, which regulate blood flow by their contractile activity, and secrete extracellular matrix, prostaglandins, and cytokines; mesangial cells also have phagocytic activity, removing proteins and other molecules trapped in the glomerular basement membrane or filtration barrier
Synonyms:exact_synonym: abnormal deep cell;   abnormal intercapillary cell;   abnormal intraglomerular mesangial cell
