Definition:aberrant amount of acetoacetate, 3-hydroxybutyrate (beta-hydroxybutyrate) and/or acetone in the blood, which are produced by fatty acid and carbohydrate metabolism and seen in conditions such as starvation and diabetes mellitus
Comment:Although 3-hydroxybutyrate is not a ketone, it is classed as a ketone body because it exists in equilibrium with acetoacetate.
