MAMMALIAN PHENOTYPE - ANNOTATIONS

The Mouse Adult Gross Anatomy Ontology and Mammalian Phenotype Ontology are downloaded weekly from the Mouse Genome Informatics databases at Jackson Laboratories (ftp://ftp.informatics.jax.org/pub/reports/index.html). For more information about these ontologies, see the MGI Publications Page at http://www.informatics.jax.org/mgihome/other/publications.shtml.

Term:abnormal vomeronasal organ morphology
go back to main search page
Accession:MP:0002243 term browser browse the term
Definition:any structural anomaly of the tubular, crescent-sensory organ with a luminal epithelium that contains chemosensitive receptor cells with microvilli that are thought to detect pheromones and transmit signals to the remainder of the accessory olfactory system; the organ lies at the base the nasal cavity and is split into two, separated by the nasal septum
Comment:This organ is believed to function in sensing pheromones. While the structure has been thought to be absent from higher primate adults, some data suggests that a form may be present in adult humans.
Synonyms:exact_synonym: abnormal Jacobson organ morphology;   abnormal Jacobson's organ morphology;   abnormal VNO morphology;   abnormal organon vomeronasale morphology;   abnormal organum vomeronasale morphology;   vomeronasal organ dysplasia
