Definition:The total number of microscopically detected kidney tubule casts observed in a kidney.Renal intratubular casts may be hyaline or granular and observed in a number of renal diseases. Commonly observed hyaline (eosinophilic, homogeneous, proteinaceous) casts are associated with increased glomerular permeability such as with chronic progressive nephropathy and granular (necrotic cellular debris) casts are indicative of previous tubule cell necrosis.
