The amount of the protein cystatin C found in a specified sample of blood, the fluid that circulates through the heart, arteries, capillaries and veins carrying nutrients and oxygen to the body tissues and metabolites away from them. Cystatin C is a member of the cystatin superfamily of proteins, is the most abundant extracellular inhibitor of cysteine proteases, and can be found in high concentrations in biological fluids.
