A calculated measurement in which the value for high density lipoprotein cholesterol and the value for low density lipoprotein cholesterol in a specified sample of plasma are subtracted from the value for total cholesterol in that same sample. For rodents, the result is an approximation of the amount of very low density lipoprotein cholesterol in that sample.
